About XxfruitcakexX...

I was born in Las Vegas, Nevada and have been here ever since.

I began cosplaying around 2005 but took a break after I got back surgery for severe scoliosis. I then continued with cosplay around 2010.

I love being creative and exploring new outlets and materials. I still have so much to learn but I enjoy cosplay and all the opportunities and people that I get exposed to. I also enjoy geeking out and fangirling over my favorite anime/videogames.

How did you come up with the name xxfruitcakexx?

When I was in middle school my friend and I made our own anime characters. My characters name in Japanese meant desserts. From there my friends started calling me a fruitcake because of how funny and crazy I could be. I have always liked the nickname so I decided to use it as my cosplay alias. I still have old story plots and pictures of my OC and sometimes I get the urge to cosplay her. lol

What is scoliosis and does it effect you now?

Scoliosis is a medical condition where your spine begins to grow curved or even twisted. I had a curvature of 120 degrees right before I got my surgery which is a severe case. It left me with a huge scar going from my neck all the way down my back, but other than that it does not hurt but it does limit my flexibility.

I used to be really insecure about it which is why I didnt cosplay much.. I was too scared about what other people would think about my scar. Now I think my scar is what makes me unique and I love it when people ask me how I got it. I usually tell them I got into a ninja fight or I had wings but the government ripped them out and replaced my back with titanium. lol Imma cyborg XD

How do you choose your characters to cosplay?

I usually pic characters that I absolutely enjoyed in the anime/videogame. I have cosplayed characters that I had no idea about but my friends needed a certain character so I like to help out. Usually though, I choose a character that I really love. I do this because if I really enjoy the character, i will be much more dedicated and motivated to work on the cosplay.. I dont watch much anime so most of my cosplays are based of videogame characters. I feel like I get more attached to videogame characters because I get to interact with their stories and adventure other than just watching it on a monitor. I am also a huge gamer gal and I do get competitive when I play.

I also donit mind cosplaying either boy or girl characters. I actually think crossplaying is alot more fun because I get to act like how I think guys would act and its an interesting experience.

What is your favorite part about cosplay?

There are so many parts to cosplay. There is the first part which is planning. Planning for me is always a huge motivator because I get really excited and I start breaking down the costume.

The second part is buying and constructing. I enjoy buying the materials because I like going into a store and finding the perfect color of fabric or that perfect shape to make a prop. It's almost like Christmas for me though I dislike the poor feeling afterwards. lol

Constructing is a bipolar experience for me. There are days where I get excited and motivated to work on cosplay and then there are days where I dont even want to touch anything realted to cosplay. haha It also doesnt hekp that I get distracted alot.

The last step is my favorite which is wearing it. I get to finally see how everything comes togetehr and sometimes I get so excited I want to just walk out to the con almost forgetting to put on some of the accessories. lol I love the shock look that people get when they see some of my cosplays and I really enjoy it when people compliment or ask about the cosplay. It really makes me feel accomplished. I also get to meet some amazing people at conventions and they are so kind to share some of their knowledge.

Any Advice on cosplayers who are just starting?

Don't be afraid. If there is a cosplay you want to do, dont let anything or anyone stop you. Cosplay is a hobby and like every hobby, it should be something that gives you a good feeling at the end of the day. It should be something you love and should be done for you and no one else. Wether you're cosplaying for fame or for fun, it should be something that makes you happy. There is so much to learn in this hobby and with cosplay you should always look forward to learning about new materials and ways to make things.

I have no problem with people cosplaying characters they dont know, i dont mind people who buy their cosplays, and I dont care about how you look in a cosplay and you shouldn't either. I cosplay because I love it and it makes me all giddy inside. lol
